On May 22, The Center for the Arts in Grass Valley, Ca welcomed Sawyer Fredericks to their main stage theater with a double billing and twice sold out show. Sunday's performances began at 3:00 and 7:30 p.m. and were filled with Fredericks fans eager to hear him live after coming to know his amazing voice and soulful demeanor on The Voice in its eighth season.
Few on the west coast or beyond the borders of Sawyer's upstate New York farmland territory knew the name or the sound of this young man until his 2015 televised appearance. However, at the tender of age 15 and his The Voice audition, Sawyer had already immersed himself in his singing and songwriting passion, learned to play the guitar at the age of 10 and issued his first full length album at the age of 13 through CD Baby. The young singer's introduction to the larger world was marked by a walloping hit with viewers and record iTunes sales.
Open spaces, hard working people, family and community support have all fostered Sawyer Fredericks' musical pursuits. His soulful folk singing is marked by a voice that can chill a listener to the bone, inspire deeper listening and muster enthusiasm for whatever verse he sings.. His baby album, Out My Window, reveals a testing of the waters before he had sunk his feet in the maturity of a deeper, fuller voice and more expansive experiences. Although Sawyer is still young, his voice has developed to be able to somehow remind one of the legends with voices that come from deep within and summon feeling. Sawyer makes music that makes one feel and his music sounds like genuine feeling.
The double filled 300 seat capacity theater in Grass Valley was brimming with fans quite aware of Sawyer Fredericks' charms. Even those who aren't fond of his genre can't deny the beauty of his voice and the magic of his lyrics. Being a song writer, musician and vocalist are all part of Sawyer's repertoire but the magic happens somewhere beyond bare skills and practice. There is a purity in his expression that transcends training and it is this magic that could potentially lead him to join the ranks of legends like Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Patsy Kline.
As long as Sawyer Fredericks "remains true to himself" as team captain Pharrell advised, and he keeps strongly rooted to the land and the people who fostered him, he will continue to grow in positive directions. Millions look forward to seeing what road Sawyer will travel and what will come of his soulfulness, humble nature, and that indescribable glimmer gifted from beyond. For now, we have his live appearances as he tours, his newly released debut full length A Good Storm with 11 tracks and hope for a young man's future that could easily draw multiple thousands to a venue before long. You can find out more about Sawyer Fredericks' tour dates and venue locations at his official website (found here.)
