Overall, this LP is worse than any previous. It's full of gimmicks, but they aren't even creative gimmicks. The vocal splitting and doubling was creative in my basement using a reel to reel in the early 70's, but nowadays, even free software makes this a pedestrian task and it just sounds amateurish. There are 12 songs on the LP, and in 2 weeks from today, only 1 of them will be less than a year old and only 3 more less than 2 years old. Sawyer is at his best when it's just him and his guitar and a little bit of reverb. This album also takes some of his finest songs and turns them into garbage.
FFY - April 2019 - I like this song... but it's better without understanding it's about his self loathing... the audio treatment of splitting his vocals into two channels is a goat voiced gimmick...
IATB - April 2019 - No one talks in falsetto... and the vocal calisthenics of switching from normal to falsetto are yet another gimmick...
TTS - December 2016 - a strange version of a weak song... the vocal doubling is gimmickry
Amen - October 2018 - Love the funk...the vocal splitting gimmick.. again... the lyrics are so weak and overly repetitive... what a waste for such a good sound...
Born - Aug 2017 - Stable tomb... what the hell even is that? and... more falsetto gimmicks...
NMG - 2011 - vocal gimmicks... turned a really good song into a trash... even the great groove of the original version has been slowed down beyond the point of dragging...and ending with "someone"
Stalker - Oct 2017 - vocal gimmicks... still... Live, this is a really nice music that doesn't really go with the lyrics... the recording even messes that up...
LYT - 2015- where Hide Your Ghost was billed as "stripped down".. this song shows how overproduction ruins even an already bad song...
Call It Good - 2020 - It's a shame when good music is wasted on lame lyrics... It could have been a good social awareness song, but he just had to have his "sheeple" moment of indignant insults. Reading the lyrics from a different viewpoint turns the song into a Snarker's anthem about the lameness of the rest of the album. The music sounds awesome, but that's because of the band, not Sawyer.
4P - 2013 - another version? seriously? this is like a schizophrenic mix between the first two recorded versions... with horrible sounding slide guitar added... slowed down... like a leopard running in slow motion...
EITM - 2015? - Another beautiful song overproduced...
DGB - Apr 2019 - falsetto and vocal calisthenics wrap up a really weak, gimmicky, overproduced LP..
Has Sawyer run out of good music and lyrics? Maybe not completely, but he's only given us 5 songs in 3 years now and IMO only 3 of those are listenable and that's only if you ignore the lyrics. This is definitely not the same quality of music fans grew accustomed to. Up and coming has turned into going and down. If this is his musical vision, it's become clouded.
I long for the day when Sawyer returns to his roots.
