RED MEMORIES
Lyrics and music by Sawyer Fredericks
Never one to follow Never one to lead Never one to swallow My pride and leave
And the scar on my back tells me I’m not well And the man in the mirror He tells me as well
Something wrong in my eyes ‘Cause I don’t see what you see There is blood in the river And fire in the sea
If it’s all in my head When I die I’ll wake up I don’t fear death I’ll just pick up where I left off
When the world crumbles And the walls fall I will die with laughter 'Cause it made a fool of us all
Take a look in my head Tell me what you see Cut out all the red memories They are the ones that haunt me
So take a look in my head Cut out all you see Cut out all the red memories They are the ones that haunt me

A highly devoted Sawyerized fan's reflection on "Red Memories" You are welcome to read it or not.
Sawyer does not share his opinions and feelings readily in print or conversation, but he does sing them "if you listen". He has said that he wrote it when he was on The Voice. He sings that he carries "haunting red memories in his head". Red is the color for hot and also anger.

Jude, can you find us where he said he wrote "Red Memories" while on The Voice? I have only heard him introduce it as his latest original. Thanks.

I was at three of his recent West Coast shows plus watched him on Periscope. He said it is one if his most recent songs (first played on this tour) and he wrote it when he was im LA debutting 4 Pockets on the Voice (May 3). When he in troduced it (Tucson or Alburquerque), he said the lyrics were vague and he likes vague lyrics so that people can make their own interpretations. I personally suspect that his red memories refer to the time spent on The Voice. Red is clearly the color of The Voice. From other things I have heard him share, it sounds like his Voice experience was a very bittersweet time in his life. If you listen to current "unnamed" (his go-to stairwell song) which he says he belted out to vent during his time on The Voice, I think it explains things even further ... it was dark in there ... "but at least, he found his window"

My thoughts went immediately to our troops who have suffered and experienced so many red memories and how hopeless they must have felt arriving home with "Red Memories" of conflict and pain only to try to lead normal lives that will never be again.

"but at least, he found his window" Thanks for the clarification, Treppa. I had thought I heard him say he wrote this when he was back in LA to perform 4 Pockets on the Voice. However interpreted, it is one of his most haunting songs, in my opinion.

Thank you for the more current comments about Red Memories since I wrote my original ones. I thought maybe I had made a big misinterpretation, so feel better now that I was on the right track. However, while rereading it a couple of times, I sincerely came to the realization that our guest's words about its powerful message ringing true for our combat veterans is SO intuitive! Sawyer may have written Red Memories with that intent. If so, it becomes a more important lyric and song for him. Let us not forget it, and encourage it as a permanent part of his repertoire and performances. I felt from his first steps on the Voice that he could be (or already is) a minstrel calling for peace.

Red Memories lyrics and melody prompted other thoughts for me. The verse he sings about not fearing death, waking up and just pick up where he left off -- those lyrics remind me of the sleep paralysis diagnosis. I cannot imagine how terrifying that must be and especially for someone gifted with such a sensitive soul.
My daughter used to have night terrors, a different sleep disorder - I wonder if the visions are similar? (Night terrors are not remembered by the sufferer. She would look awake, and scream, and thrash, but she never remembered her dreams.)
Sawyer constantly amazes me with how these songs just pour from him. Incredible heart. Incredible artist.
