Caffé Lena in Saratoga Springs has been called a national treasure. However, for more than 55 years it's been a treasure that some people couldn't access.
That's about to change. The coffee house will be renovated and updated as part of a major construction project.
Inside these double doors is a narrow old staircase that leads to a small stage where Bob Dylan, Don McLean and Sawyer Fredericks have played.
The performers have changed over the years, but the place hasn't. It will soon.
It doesn't look much different than when Lena Spencer opened Caffé Lena in 1960.
If these walls could talk, they'd tell you about performances from a young Bob Dylan, Don McLean, or more recently Sawyer Fredericks, winner of The Voice.
The cafe is believed to be the longest running coffee house in the country and has been called a national treasure by the Library of Congress.
The not-for-profit group that runs it has been working on a plan to upgrade. And now it gets a major boost from developer Sonny Bonacio who is buying Caffé Lena's parking lot with plans to build a four-story condo and retail complex connected to the cafe.
The two buildings will share an elevator, solving Caffé Lena's half-century old access problem.
“We know this is a really phenomenal stairwell coming up and it has, but kind of getting in and out of this building is not quite up to code,” admitted Bonacio.
They're also planning some major upgrades inside. More seating, a new green room, and better sound system. Overall, more comfortable for performers and guests.
The stage will remain much the same as it was when Bob Dylan played here in the early 1960s, and Sawyer Fredericks played more recently.
“The ideas we have for decoration of the space and the way we're going to finish it off are going to accentuate that feel of history and magic that's in the room,” explained Sarah Craig with Caffé Lena.
